Andy Maurer, who played for my father's Oregon's teams from 1967-69

and then was an unlikely starting tackle on the Broncos' 1977 AFC

championship team, died Sunday.

Here's Steve Mims' story in the Eugene Register-Guard.

Maurer, then Oregon's senior tight end, is the second from left on a

1969 Ducks football program cover. From left to right are basketball

forward Larry Holliday (who was 6-foot-3, but once famously

outjumped UCLA's Kareem Abdul-Jabbar at an opening tip),

Maurer, Leslie Wimberly, wide receiver Bob Newland (later of the New

Orleans Saints), Dody Dornsife and hoops star Stan Love (Kevin Love's father).

I caught up with Andy in 2007 while doing interviews for my

book 77: Denver, the Broncos, and A Coming of Age. I remember

laughing a lot.

Below is the Maurer bio passage from the book, which came out in

late 2008.

The reference to my brother, David, now better known

as NBC's dog-show expert and consultant and as the long-time television

analyst on the Westminster Kennel Club Show and the National Dog Show,

is because he was the Broncos' assistant director of public relations in 1977.

I was a rookie newspaper reporter at the time, fresh out of CU.
